Gardaí in Gurranabraher have launched an investigation after a communications mast on the Northside of the City caught fire last night.

Units of the Fire Service responded to the incident on Harbour View Road just after 11pm and quickly brought the fire under control.

The installation of masts to improve 3G and 4G coverage on the northside of the City has proved controversial, however City Hall confirmed that the structures are exempt from full planning permission as they are below a certain height.

A number of 5G masts in Ireland and the UK have been set on fire and vandalised after conspiracy theorists tried to link them to the spread of Covid-19 and other health problems
