Sophie Toscan du Plantier's uncle insists Ian Bailey will get a fair trial if he agrees to travel to France.

The former journalist was convicted in his absence of her murder in west Cork by a Paris court in 2019 - but France has failed to get him extradited.

The French president last week promised Mr Bailey a new trial for the crime, which took place 25 years ago.

Sophie's uncle, Jean-Pierre Gazeau, is urging him to take up the offer.

Ian Bailey's solicitor Frank Buttimer told the Neil Prendeville Show this morning Mr Bailey would not be travelling to France to face trial.

He says he would have been happy to go on trial in Ireland if the DPP had seen fit.

"Ian Bailey constantly said 'prosecute me in Ireland' - which is the venue of the offence, where all the witnesses are, where the evidence is, where our standard of criminal trial is etc etc.

"But that never could have happened because let's get real here - as far back as 1996, the DPP said there isn't enough evidence."
