A coalition of trade unions, student and community groups and local representatives are holding a cost-of-living protest in the city centre on Saturday.

The group say the protest on Patrick Street at 2pm is to show solidarity with the people it says face the choice of “heating or eating” and are calling on the Government to do more to tackle the crisis.

Protests are also being held in Limerick, Dublin, Galway and Sligo.

Representatives from the group are holding a press conference in the city this hour to call for action to be taken.

Caitriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners is one of the speakers at today’s launch.

She told RedFM News that they are seeing more and more people struggling to afford their bills:

"Unless you're earning good wages, or way up over the top wages, you just can't make ends meet now. We see more people falling into and falling behind in payments because you have the cars, you have the tax, you have the insurance, you have the fuel, you have everything like that. You have the kids going to school, you might be living in a rural area and they need to get busses. Everything has gone up for them."
