A golden morning in Skibbereen as Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won Ireland's first ever rowing Gold at the Olympics.

The Skibbereen pair came home overnight ahead of teams from Germany and Italy in the final of the men's lightweight double sculls in Tokyo.

President Michael D Higgins says it's a tremendous achievement which will inspire more generations, while Taoiseach Micheal Martin says today is a great day for Irish rowing and the Irish people.

It’s only the seventh time Ireland has secured gold at the Games.

Micheal Martin says Paul and Fintan will inspire generations to come.
