Crews from the City and County Councils are on standby to deal with flooding and fallen trees as torrential rain continues to fall.

Gel and Sandbags are available to the public and businesses at Tramore Valley Park Civic Amenity site up to 5pm today.

The City Council can be contacted on 021-492 40 00 while the County Council's emergency number is 021 4800 048.

The Orange Rain Warning is in place until midnight tomorrow, with Met Eireann saying that heavy or thundery downpours will continue with drier weather developing in most parts during the day.

Further falls of heavy or thundery rain will develop through the evening and early night.

A number of power outages have been reported in Dunmanway, Bantry and Rathmore.

Motorists are being asked to slow down and to expect spot flooding and surface water on the road.

Speaking to RedFM News, Brian Farrell from the Road Safety Authority is asking motorists to be especially careful when near cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

"Certainly when you're driving behind any goods vehicles, or heavy vehicles, just be mindful of the spray that they kick up, it  can reduce your visibility and just a pull back even further, just to just to make sure that you know you can see in front of you because that spray will reduce your visibility.

"It's really just for everyone to understand that the conditions are going to be challenging over the next 24 hours and even when the rain stops, the roads will be quite treacherous with with flooding, so just take it easy."

David Joyce, Director of Services with Cork City Council says they're expecting the torrential rain to return by lunchtime.

"There were no significant issues overnight.

"We did have one tree come down and one fence in the city but other than that, it was a quiet night.

"There was however very very heavy rain overnight and but it didn't lead to flooding.

"Please drive with care. There may be some localised ponding on the roads and a Met Eireann orange warning is in place to midnight tonight and they are predicting a second wave of heavy rain coming in from lunchtime onwards today."
