The first of the measures announced in the Budget are now in effect.

Around 2 and a half cent has been added to the cost of a litre of petrol and diesel.

While tobacco products have increased by 50 cent.

Meanwhile, the Budget has been criticised for not progressing the Government promise to cap the cost of childcare at 200 euro per child per month.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe says they can't afford to do everything in one budget.

"It contains around €60m in regards to the National Childcare scheme, that I believe is going to make that scheme available to a further 35,000 children.

"So we are prioritising in this budget progress on accessibility to get more children on to the National Childcare Scheme.

"But I know that in future budgets that once we have improved accessibility, affordability will then get further priority."
