Cork University Hospital has been singled out as "problematic"

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and his officials have been touring some of the hospitals that have been identified as performing poorly in terms of overcrowding and long waiting lists

In particular, Government ministers have targeted under performing hospital managers and consultants at Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick.

They've accused management of failing to deliver at a time when a record €23 billion is being spent on health.

The Cabinet is said to be deeply concerned over how resources will be managed in theses hospitals in the weeks ahead

Separately, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has long been calling on the Government to bring in measures to retain nurses

Speaking to RedFM News, the INMO's Colm Porter says the retention of nurses would help address the overcrowding crisis at CUH:

"There's a need for extra nurses. We need more capacity in the system. The likes of non-urgent care in public hospitals has to halt and we need to get the private hospital system to step in".
