Pairc ui Chaoimh needs big concerts like tonight's Ed Sheeran's concert.

That's according to the secretary of Cork GAA who was speaking ahead of 80,000 fans descending on the stadium over the next two nights to see the singer/song writer.

This is his second series of gigs in Cork since he kicked off his Irish tour at the stadium in 2018 and Ed's concerts are the first big outdoor gig in two years with concert promoters Aiken saying there is a huge appetite for live music in Cork.

Much has been written about his "in the round" staging with Peter Aiken of Aiken Promotions describing it as "spectacular" and like nothing he had ever seen before ensuring fans no matter whwere they are in the staidum feel connected to Ed.

Concert goers are reminded to have their tickets downloaded and their phones fully charged as this is the first fully digital ticket tour.

Secretary of Cork GAA Kevin O'Donovan told RedFM News that the stadium needs events such as the Ed gigs to function annually.

"Commercially they're game changers, because we need large events. It's a large stadium, it's a €100m asset.

"It needs large events to function annually. The GAA calendar has a number of those events, but we need to look beyond the GAA calendar to secure other events. We do so on a daily basis in meetings and events, and we must do so in terms of on the pitch and in terms of being a concert venue."
