A Cork pharmacist says basics such as good hand hygiene and coughing etiquette will help to reduce the spread of the Strep A virus.
The comments from Nigel Maloney of CarePlus Pharmacy in Carrigaline comes as parents are being urged to make themselves aware of the signs of Strep A and if their child has viral symptoms to
keep them home from school or childcare facility.
Symptoms include a high fever, severe muscle aches, nausea and vomiting along with stomach pain.
Speaking to RedFM News pharmacist Nigel Maloney says they are seeing an increase in the number of antibiotics they are dispensing this winter:
"Since socialization has increased and the mask wearing has reduced, we've dropped our guard a bit in terms of transmission of COVID-19. All these things that have culminated to result in a big increase in bacterial infections are going around the community that we have noticed since the last two, three months. A massive increase in the number of prescriptions we're seeing for antibiotics for for adults and kids with strep throat and other respiratory infections."
