International women’s rights organisation ActionAid has named Cork as one of the most generous counties in Ireland.

Cork was the second most generous county by actual numbers of donations to the organisation, Dublin coming in first.

Kerry ranked first in terms of donations to ActionAid per percentage of the population and Cork seventh.

Karol Balfe, CEO of ActionAid Ireland, said:

“2022 presented huge challenges for human rights- from war, climate change, and unfair economic practices. The cost-of-living crisis is affecting everyone, both here in Ireland and overseas. The climate crisis is having a devastating impact on communities in the global south, particularly in the Horn of Africa where hunger is a daily reality for people. We’ve also seen unjust economic policies having a heart-breaking impact on children around the world, with global education now in crisis. We’re very grateful to the people of Cork, many of whom have been supporting us to work with women and children around the world for decades.”

The new and continued support from people in Cork is particularly valued this year, this Christmas ActionAid is highlighting the global crisis in education, with almost 244 million children and young people now out of school around the world. There are a further 69 million more teachers needed by 2030 to achieve the sustainable development goal for education.
