A man who sexually abused his younger sister for almost twenty years has been jailed for six and a half years.

45 year old Andrew Healy of Garrane Darra, Wilton, Cork pleaded guilty to 16 counts of sexually assaulting the child on various dates between 1992 and 2009.

The Central Criminal Court heard the abuse began when the girl was aged four or five and Healy was 15.

Most of the offences took place in the family home in Ballincollig, one offence took place at Healy's home at Brentwood Court, Whites Oaks in Wilton and some of the assaults were carried out at another location in Cork.

Detective Garda Craig Peterson told the court that the offences came to light in early 2017 when the victim went to Gardaí.

The woman said her life had fallen apart as a result of what had happened to her and she had ended up on anti-depressants and suicide watch.

Today in court, Mr. Justice Tony Hunt said he accepted that Healy is genuinely remorseful and noted that his early guilty plea had meant the victim did not have give evidence.

He sentenced Healy to seven and a half years and suspended the final year on a number of conditions including that he not contact the woman ever again without her permission.
