A man who quit his job to care for his partner says the low credit alarm on their pre-pay electricity meter is something they hear every week.

Mechanical engineer John McCarthy from Mayfield was speaking at a press conference for the Cost of Living Campaign in the city this afternoon.

John says he and his partner Claire are finding it harder and harder to budget for their electricity and are being forced to watch their spending extremely closely.

John will be taking part in a cost of living protest on Saturday the 12th of November on Grand Parade.

Speaking to RedFM News, John says they will try not to use their central heating for as long as possible:

"We don't use the heating yet, we haven't started yet. We're working towards probably December you know it's bearable now. We'll don't need to put up there the central you know, but when we do, that's another worry another 50 or 60 quid a week we're gonna have to find on a fixed income loss in salary that I've made. I mean, I'm on 200 and some homes on three times that were switched over to ready to go or pay to go meet us and everything."
