Matt Knight’s son, Oscar, adores feeding the ducks and now Matt has enabled his fellow community members to join in on the fun.

Matt was aware that it wasn’t recommended to give the birds bread, due it being possibly detrimental for their health and the water quality around them.

Matt’s innovative thinking, paired with his father-in-law Liam’s craftsmanship help, has resulted in Carrigaline now being the home to the very first Cork Duck Feed Initiative feed dispenser.

The dispenser is located by the popular duck pond in the Cork town and is essentially a vending machine for bird feed.

The second of the dispensers is planned to be finished and put at the Lough in Cork city in November.

By placing 50 cents into the dispenser, you will be given a small bag of feed for the ducks.

This is for two reasons – to first cover the cost of the machine and feed and secondly to avoid overfeeding of the birds.

There is also a QR Code on each dispenser, which when scanned, brings you to a website that Matt created.

On the website people can find out more information about the birds and other local river wildlife, with tips and facts available.

Matt has received permission from both Cork City and County Council’s to install the dispensers and he and his family hope to help the little ducks through the Winter season.
