A Cork halting site deemed as having the worst living conditions in the country is set to be redeveloped.

An 18 million euro plan was agreed by the Cork city council and will see the construction of 27 residential units at Spring Lane and Ellis’s Yard.

Councillors highlighted the deplorable living conditions at last nights council meeting.

Cork councillor John Sheehan says the plan needs to be a new beginning for the residents of the site.

"If it was raining, the area flooded. If you had to take a shower or go to the bathroom at nighttime, you had to go to these old toilet blocks. Rats could be running around, and we can't have a situation where with the new development, we just have a repetition of what currently exists. It has to be a new beginning for everyone".
