The City's Lord Mayor is to open a Book of Condolences at City Hall later today for cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan.

The mother of two passed away yesterday aged 48.

Lord Mayor Cllr. Deirdre Forde says her loss will be felt enormously and she's invited the public to pay their respects by signing the book at City Hall from 12.30pm.

Vicky Phelan exposed the scandal at Cervical Check after her own smear test in 2011 was not read accurately.

She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014 and brought the issue to public light in 2018.

Simon Harris was Health Minister at the time, and says Vicky Phelan fought to make the system better for women:

"The most incredible advocate I ever came across. The first conversation I ever had with Vicky, she said to me something good must come from this. Every single interaction I had with her from that point on was always about wanting something called up, and wanting women's health care to improve, wanting to rebuild confidence in the screening program. Her generosity in that regard, I know lots of people know lots of examples of it and what I can tell you is there are so many more examples behind the scenes, private little things she did to help people."
