The Lord Mayor of the City has described Vicky Phelan as a remarkable and courageous woman who fought tirelessly to highlight injustices in the system.
Cllr Deirdre Forde was speaking at City Hall in the past half an hour where a book of condolences has opened for the cervical cancer campaigner.
The mother of two passed away in Limerick yesterday aged 48 after developing cervical cancer in 2014 following an incorrect smear test result in 2011.
The book of condolences will be open to members of the public to sign at City Hall for the next two weeks.
Speaking to RedFM News, Lord Mayor of the City, Cllr Deirdre Forde said Vicky Phelan’s loss will be felt across the country:
"We all felt that we knew Vicky, personally, even though we may not have met her. And of course, we followed her journey, and parts of that were joyful, and the other parts were heartbreaking. We went every step of the way with her. So this finality and it's very sad in that alone for her children or family, or wider circle of friends, but for all of us, she left a wonderful legacy. She's put up the standard to us now to continue into the future, you know, to carry on her good work."
Melanie was one of the first people to sign the book of condolence.
She told RedFM News how she felt about Vicky:
"Vicky was a great example for standing up for what's right she meant an awful lot to a lot of women out there especially and mothers. Yesterday evening I just really felt so sad for her two children. I hope she rest in peace and I hope that her legacy is one that actually allows a healthier system to be there for women."
