Cork City Hall will light up as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is to be marked in Ireland today.
A number of events are taking place across the country, with a focus this year on the victims of serious injuries and their families.
24,663 people have been killed and 84,977 have been seriously injured on Irish roads since records began
Road Safety Authority spokesperson, Brian Farrell says families still grieve long after a crash:
"The collision on the fatality may have occurred many many years ago. The families are still feeling the pain as if it was yesterday and the grief as if it was yesterday. We also remember those who have been seriously injured on our roads as well. And indeed, it's also time for us to remember and acknowledge the work that the emergency services to who are on the frontline and have to deal with it with the horrific aftermath of a collision."
