A Cork City Fire Service union representative says the City Fire Service cannot be run exclusively on a 'value for money' basis.

Billy Crowley was speaking after Ballincollig Fire Station was closed by Cork City Council on Tuesday evening.

The fire station in Ballincollig was crewed by fire fighters from Anglesea Street and Ballyvolane on an overtime basis after several of the part-time crew in Ballincollig began training to become full-time in September.

Speaking to RedFM News, Billy Crowley outlines his concerns.

"We're back to a situation where we have three pumps covering a large city.

"What we have essentially is the fire cover that we had for what we call the 'old' city boundary is now covering the 'new' city boundary, which as you know is four or five times larger than the old city with nearly double the population.

"It's not a service where you can look for value for money, it's not a bottom line service.

"We don't produce anything, we're there to help people when they need us.

"It's not a pounds, shillings and pence exercise as far as we're concerned."
