A Cork City Fire Service union rep says there are now just three fire pumps covering the entire city following the closure of Ballincollig Fire Station on Tuesday.

Billy Crowley was speaking after the City Fire Service lost one of their fire tenders this week in what he says is a cost cutting move.

Ballincollig Fire Station, which was crewed by part-time retained fire fighters up to September this year, became part of the City Fire Service when the city boundary extension came into effect in May 2019.

Several of the part time crew in Ballincollig successfully applied for a full time role in the City Fire Service and are now in the process of being trained.

Fire fighters from the City were then moved to Ballincollig on a full time basis to provide cover for the area...

Speaking to RedFM News, Billy Crowley says they are concerned about the closure of the fire station in Ballincollig.

"City Hall says it was too expensive to cover it with the over time.

"We have new recruits coming on stream and that would have alleviated an awful lot of the expense, but that's what we were told yesterday, that it was too expensive to continue.

"You have to have a credible amount of people, it has to be fit for purpose, and at the moment our feeling is that it just wouldn't' be fir for purpose what we have at the moment.

"You're trying to cover too much with too little."

RedFM News has contacted the City Council for a comment.
