Cork could receive fines if something isn't done about climate change.

That's according to Cork Councillor John Maher who is calling for free public transport to be implemented in Cork.

The Labour Party Councillor has said the cost of running free transport would be high, but that fines will be issued if something isn't done about reducing traffic and emissions.

The party wrote to the head of the National Transport Authority and the Minister for Transport suggesting that offering free bus and train services for school children in Cork City could be a start in tackling climate change.

Speaking to RedFM News, Councillor John Maher says free public transport is a solutions to meeting climate targets.

"The cost of free public transport is going to have a cost on the Public Exchequer, but if we don't meet our climate targets and the challenges ahead of us we're going to receive fines.

"I believe we need to do things differently - we need to increase public transport, we need to increase our cycle infrastructure, and free travel is another way that we have to look at that will help us get to where we need to be."
