Up to 60 residents began a protest at the entrance to the estate at 6am this morning and say they plan to keep up their protest until their demands are met.

Lios Cara residents held a meeting last night where they agreed that this morning’s blockade would go ahead.

Residents took to the entrance at 6am to block builders from working on 44 homes.

The people on the blockade told RedFM News that builders turned up at the estate just before 6:30am this morning and moved to site elsewhere due to the protest.

Sandwiches have been dropped off to the protesters and cups of tea and coffee are being handed out to those standing at the blockade, while a radio is playing in the background.

Nine red plastic safety barriers are blocking the entrance, while access continues for residents.

It follows what residents say is the refusal of the developer to engage with them over plans for all 44 homes to become social housing.

Residents at the entrance this afternoon say they want a mix of social, affordable and private housing to satisfy the needs of everyone in the community. In a statement to RedFM News this morning, the Lios Cara Residents Committee say residents are “overwhelming in their conviction to support the protest until the developer engages with them in a meaningful way.”
