Alcohol action Ireland say over half a million Irish people are showing some evidence of alcohol use disorders.

A survey released today shows that Irish men can drink 17 standard drinks for as little as €7.65 while women can consume 11 drinks for just under five euro.

Minimum unit pricing is set to be introduced in January 2022 and will mean a standard drink cannot be sold for less than one euro.

Speaking to Red FM News, Eunan McKinney from Alcohol Action Ireland says alcohol is impacting the nation.

"578,000 people in Ireland are showing presence of alcohol abuse disorders.

"In that sense we have a chorionic problem with alcohol, which is causing us untold damage to our health, but also to the wider social and economic well being of the nation, because alcohol continues to be a negative impact on our performance but also on our wellbeing."
