The additional beds were approved by HSE yesterday.
It's expected the expansion will allow for improvement on the level of elective procedures carried out at the North Cork hospital.
The beds will also reduce waiting lists and workload pressures on the larger hospitals in the region.
It's understood that work on the 48-bed block could begin on site in the coming months.
