More than 13,500 people were in emergency accommodation in November, including over 4,100 children.

Both totals are new records for the Department of Housing.

The latest figures show that 545 adults were accessing emergency accommodation in Cork in the last week of November

Wayne Stanley from the Simon Communities says there needs to be more progress on eradicating homelessness

"4,105 children is a new record - a new shameful record. Those numbers are for November and that means over 4,000 children faced into Christmas this year in emergency homeless accommodation. All of those people are in homelessness and this is a preventable trauma. Nobody is saying that we could end homelessness tomorrow but we could be making a lot more progress"
