It's 42 years today since the Buttevant Rail Disaster in north Cork.

It was the worst rail accident in Irish history.

The Dublin to Cork train derailed at high speed at Buttevant station, killing 18 people and injuring more than 70 others.

Gardaí, a fleet of fire engines and ambulances from Mallow Hospital carrying doctors and nurses attended the scene.

Helicopters airlifted the more seriously injured from a nearby field.

Meanwhile, in the past week, Irish Rail has said it supports the County Council’s calls for State funding - to reopen Buttevant Railway Station to passengers as more people are encouraged to avail of public transport.
