The 24-hour road safety campaign ended at seven this morning.

Gardai and GoSafe carried out more than 192,000 speed checks over the period.

Here in Cork a motorist was detected travelling at 120km in a 100km/h Zone on the N20 at Kilmona in Grenagh and 91 km in a 80km/h Zone at Ballyvergan East in Youghal.

There have been nine fatalities on Cork roads this year, to date.

Superintendent Tom Murphy of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau told RedFM News that motorists need to take personal responsibility for their driving and actions on the roads:

"I wouldn't be, I wasn't highly visible on the road and therefore the message is not just a one day campaign we're trying to put the message out there that we're going to be out every day of the week but the drivers have a responsibility themselves to drive within the capabilities, drive within the speed limit. In Cork we've had nine fatalities this year. The most recent in Bandon earlier this month, and it's nine too many in the county."
