The Taoiseach has refused to comment on the search policy in place at JD Sports where staff are asked to lift their tops as part of a crackdown on shoplifting.

The matter was raised in the Dáil by Solidarity TD Mick Barry after workers at the company's Cork store highlighted the policy.

It's understood that staff are informed when they join the firm that they may be subject to clothing and bag searches prior to leaving any company premises.

It is also understood that the search is carried out following clear guidelines which managers are fully trained on - including that a clothing search is strictly non-contact and conducted ideally by a member of management and by a person of the same sex.

Cllr Mick Barry says while the "stomach area checks" have taken place for some time in JD Sports outlets across the country they were met with opposition and resistance in the Cork store.

Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon the Taoiseach said he was not able to comment on the policy without knowing all the facts

"I prefer not to comment on the issue in relation to JD sports. I am not aware of the instance that are happening first I heard of it was now, it may be the case that there's already labour law or other laws that cover this area. And I just am now able to comment on that without without knowing all the facts, or knowing what the current legal position may already be"
