A scientific institute in Poland has labelled cats an 'invasive species' because of the damage they do to other wildlife.
The lead scientist at the state-run Academy of Sciences however was not prepared for the emotional backlash to the decision.
He says almost 1,800 other animals have been added to the list without any objections in the past.
The institute has also clarified it is opposed to cruelty towards cats - but wants owners to limit the time they spend outdoors during bird-breeding season.
