People are expressing their disappointment that there'll be no official event in the city - to switch on the Christmas lights.

The Lord Mayor of the City said the lights will be turned on this Saturday but that the Council doesn't have the 50,000 euro a public event would cost.

"Cork-mas" is the new name for 'Christmas in Cork' which will move to Emmet Place - and offer a new immersive light experience 'Solas'.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show, these people say it's time to bring back the official lighting ceremony, after 4 years without one:

"We always went for turning on the lights as a couple in the city, even without having a child. It was always the event to go to...

"It brings more business into the city as well. Shops can stay open later, and people are doing their Christmas shopping. They're in a more Christmassy feel...

"It's a major chance to showcase Cork as a so-called Second City, and I think that the people of Cork have been disappointed again".
