Over half of Irish college students have admitted taking at least one form of illicit drug.
That's according to the Drug Use in Higher Education in Ireland Survey, which was discussed in detail at a summit in UCC today.
Student leaders and academics were joined by local and national experts to outline the growing trend of substance use by college students.
UCCSU Welfare Officer Caoimhe Walsh says the report gives them a baseline to work from as they try to reduce harm to students:
"I would have had students come and disclose to me about like, you know, drug use and these kind of things. And I always felt that there was maybe nothing to back it up, you know, like statistics but it was great that having a full report on what like numbers like percentages of everything like put together it just makes it easier for us to kind of navigate where we go with things."
