A North Cork councillor says over capacity wastewater treatment plants are impacting housing development in towns, forcing young people to leave the areas completely.

Uisce Éireann says it's spent over €540 million on upgrading infrastructure across Cork over the last 10 years while an additional €1.7 billion is needed to support the delivery of over 50,000 homes per year nationally.

Speaking to RedFM News, Councillor Kay Dawson says Mitchelstown is one of many towns across Cork which is losing young families because homes cannot be built:

"About 2019, we ran into trouble with our source treatment plant and since then, I can honestly say the amount of houses that have been built are very few when you haven't got capacity and when you can't get connection you can't build houses and for that we're left with a town that's really struggling. We're losing our young people."
