Single parent families depending on social welfare are among the groups most at risk of not being able to cover the cost of essentials.

Saint Vincent de Paul’s Minimum Essential Standard of Living report found single adults are also at risk of not having enough money to cover vital costs.

It also shows the costs associated with children over the age of 12 are the highest of any age group, at 158 euro per week.

Head of Social Justice and Policy at SVP, Louise Bayliss says it builds on other data released by the EU earlier this year:

"That showed there's eight point five percent of children living in consistent poverty compared to five percent of the general population. When we look at the data, - the measurable research provides -  we can see why that is there because we can see that social welfare, income adequacy is higher for children than it is for adults and that is something that I hope the government addresses in budget 2026"
