The head of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive has defended the service after criticism following the Ringsend arson attack.

The vacant pub went on fire in the early hours of New Year's Eve.

A number of local politicians have called for a better communications strategy after claiming they weren't told of plans to turn the disused Shipwright pub in Ringsend into homeless accommodation.

They claim it could have averted problems and hostility over false rumours the building would house asylum seekers.

But the director of the DRHE told the Irish Times she did not issue any formal notice to councillors, saying it would not be normal practice to do so, as it could stigmatise people.

Mary Hayes says she confirmed to councillors who contacted her before Christmas that the building was to be used for homeless families - and says the council may have to review its practices following recent protests.
