A former Lord Mayor of Cork City says that Garda stations need to be open 24/7.

It comes as Ballincollig Garda Station's public counter is only able to open for 16 hours a week.

Recent figures from the Central Statistics Office show a significant increase in crimes such as burglaries and sexual offences in Cork City.

Former Chair of the Joint Policing Committee and a prior Lord Mayor of Cork City, Colm Kelleher says there's not enough Gardaí to do front of house duties:

"In Ballincollig, we have a station that is manned on a 24-hour basis, but the public counter is only open to the public 15 hours a week. And that is an issue I raised with the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris when he addressed the JPC, approximately 12 months ago now, and he cited the reason for that was they didn't have enough  frontline Gardaí to do front-of-house duties".
