Up to half a million people could be in receipt of the pandemic unemployment payment by the end of the month

It would mark an increase of almost 165 thousand people when compared to the numbers that received the payment yesterday.
The planned cuts to the PUP will not go ahead next month, with the current rates to remain in place until the end of March.
Tanaiste Leo Varadkar says the new restrictions will have a significant impact on people's jobs:
"The number of people on the pandemic unemployment payment back in early December was under 250,000 with the closure of hospitality on the 24th, non essential retail and leisure on the 30th and construction now, we anticipate that by the end of the month, it could be between 450,000 and 500,000 people in receipt of the pandemic unemployment payment"
