Unions: Intel Covid-19 Outbreak Must Serve As Wake Up Call To Construction Sector

Around 70 cases of the virus have been identified at the Intel building site in Leixlip, Co. Kildare since the weekend

The construction sector is expected to fully reopen next month.

Trade Union Unite says there is now an urgent need for rigorous testing regimes on all construction sites.

Unite Regional Officer Tom Fitzgerald thinks the Intel outbreak will raise fears ahead of next month's expected reopening of construction:

"I suspect that there will be, and that's the very reason why we are actually arguing for this regime of tests. So actually that we don't have to go backwards when the industry opens up in full, that we can continue working, but that we can go forward in the safest possible way. We accept entirely there's no basis to eliminate the threat of COVID, and no one person or organisation can do that, but we can do everything we can to mitigate against the dangers."
