More than 5,000 Irish residents arriving at Dublin Airport last week were returning from holidays

The figures have prompted the government to consider significantly upping the fine for non-essential international travel from 500 to 2,000 euro per person. 

It's also expected the list of countries that will require mandatory hotel quarantine will be expanded from the existing two areas.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the legislation to do that is still possibly weeks from being passed, "Because all non essential travel should be avoided... it is the intention to bring forward legislation for approval to cabinet next Tuesday, to deal with the mandatory quarantining issue."
