Man accused of discharging a firework at gardaí during Dublin anti-lockdown protest granted bail

The 30-year-old is accused of throwing a firework and two glass bottles at officers.

The court heard it's alleged Jake Merriman was present at a demonstration on Grafton Street on Saturday when violence erupted - with objects, missiles and fireworks being fired at gardai.

The 30-year-old of Meadowlands Avenue in Dun Laoighaire is facing five charges in total.

Det Sgt Patrick Traynor told the court it’s alleged the accused discharged an ‘8 shot cannon firework’ at gardai. It’s also alleged he threw two glass bottles at gardai in separate incidents.

He was granted bail with a number of conditions - including that he stay away from Grafton Street and he keeps the peace.

He must also stay at a provided address, which his barrister asked not to be read out in court, saying there had been 'a substantial amount of fanfare in the media'.

Mr Merriman is due back in court on April the 14th.
