Cabinet Ministers meeting to finalise the re-opening of schools and the updated living with COVID roadmap

Cabinet Ministers are meeting at the moment to finalise the re-opening of schools and the updated living with COVID roadmap.

It will see Level 5 restrictions extended until April 5th with only schools and childcare returning in March.

The approach will be a cautious one with case numbers still high and fears over new variants of the virus.

Social Democrats TD Holly Cairns has said the government shouldn't provide firm dates for re-opening parts of the economy if they can't be met:

"Public will is waning, and I think that's completely understandable when we have a strategy of continued rolling lockdowns. I think the government, you know, saying oh in nine weeks time we're in July, we'll look at opening up society like what is that actually based on. If we don't pick a number and work towards that are they just picking a random date,  what exactly is the reason for that?"
