There are calls for new safety measures that exist on motorways abroad to be implemented here.

The Mayor of County Cork says far too many people are coming down the wrong route or slip road and barriers with sensors are needed to stop people driving on the wrong side of motorways.

It's comes as a 16 year old boy was killed in a head on collision at Ballybeg in Mitchelstown over the weekend when the car he was travelling in was driving the wrong way on the M8.

The driver of the car and three other teenage passengers were all taken to Cork University Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other car, a woman in her 30's, is being treated for serious injuries in CUH.

Speaking to RedFM News, Mayor of County Cork and councillor Frank O'Flynn says Transport Infrastructure Ireland need to put safety measures in place.

"It's very sad news that we heard over the weekend.

"There have been far too many occasions where people are going down the wrong way from motorway roundabouts.

"I cannot say at this stage whether that was the intent or not, that's a question for the Gardai.

"But definitely, it's happening far too open throughout the length of all the motorways in Ireland.

"I'd be calling on TII for them to do an investigation, and to look and the feasibility and the possibility of putting a deterrent in place in future."
