Demands are being made for an emergency meeting on the strike affecting schools.

The ongoing action by school secretaries and caretakers across the country is continuing today - as their call for pension parity with other workers is met with a wall of silence from Government.

Labour’s Education Spokesperson Eoghan Kenny says schools are struggling to operate as normal without their essential workers - and he's written to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education asking it to intervene.

"The schools across the country are becoming unsustainable to run, and I'm quite fearful now that we will lose the entire ecosystem that the school offers because I am receiving emails from parents, principals and teachers where they are telling me that schools are not coping with a secretary or caretaker.

"This is ultimately about workers' rights, and that's what the most important thing is here, that these secretaries and caretakers would be afforded the pension parity and entitlements that their colleagues are within their schools."
