A new surgical hub could be up and running by 2028 in Cork

That's according to the health minister Stephen Donnelly, who told the echo that he is seeking approval from Government on an elective hospital that would treat less complex cases outside of hospitals

The Minister said the plans for Cork’s new clinic would tackle overcrowding in hospitals and could be up and running by 2028 if there are no planning objections.

Meanwhile, members of the public are being asked not to attend Emergency Departments in Hospital unless absolutely necessary this bank holiday weekend.

That's according to the HSE who say patients will face significant delays.

People who do need emergency care will be prioritised at ED's.

Dr. Mike O Connor National Clinical Advisor for Acute Hospitals said there are other options available for patients to consider:

"From the point of view of alternatives I suppose, the advice that we would always give is if you're worried clearly contact your GP IN normal working hours out of hours then obviously our, our GP colleagues run out of hours cooperatives, and in addition that there's some very good website advice available with my child.ie and undertheweather.ie"
