The Tánaiste is confident Simon Coveney will survive a motion of no confidence in the Dáil.

The Foreign Affairs Minister will face the Sinn Fein motion tomorrow over his handling of the Katherine Zappone controversy.

Yesterday Leo Varadkar said that Katherine Zappone's name was part of a memo delivered to the Taoiseach's office the day before her appointment, however Micheál Martin says he was not aware of her nomination until a cabinet meeting the next day.

Meanwhile a Cork based government minister has described the failed appointment of Katherine Zappone and subsequent fallout as a 'sorry affair' and says major mistakes were made.

Speaking to RedFM News, Minister Michael McGrath says Fianna Fáil must be consulted on any such appointments in the future.

"This issue has been well ventilated over recent weeks. It has been a sorry affair, major mistakes have been made.

"From my perspective, a coalition government can only work on the basis of trust and mutual respect, and that was absent in this case and can't happen again.

"From a Fianna Fáil perspective in government we expect the full details of any future appointments to be shared in advance so they can be considered and openly discussed in a proper way."
