A post mortem is due to take place on the body of a man who died in a house fire in North Cork.

The body of the man was discovered at a house on the Duntaheen Road at Liam McGearailt Place in Fermoy yesterday morning.

The trial is getting underway in Greece today of an Irishman accused of a range of offences related to people smuggling and spying.

Seán Binder is one of 24 migrant rescue volunteers who are being prosecuted for helping people at risk of drowning in the sea off Lesbos in 2018.

Amnesty International says the case is a farce and wants the charges dropped.

A new Covid-19 variant XBB.1.5, an offshoot of Omicron, has been detected here.

The variant is being tracked in several countries amid concerns it is highly contagious and better at getting around protection from vaccines and previous infection, although its full impact has yet to be assessed.

The new strain has been causing concern internationally.
