A “pathological liar” who nearly “destroyed the lives” of a senior Garda, solicitors and social workers by making serious false allegations against them has been jailed for four years.

43 year old Sonya Egan of The Lawn, Lios Cara, Killeens Co Cork was not present at Cork Circuit Court for her sentencing hearing yesterday.

Judge Catherine Staines heard that Sonya Egan, who is on hunger strike in Limerick Prison where she is currently serving a two year sentence for harassment, had waived her right to appear in court.

Judge Staines said she refused to be “manipulated” by the actions of a woman capable of extreme manipulation.

Two separate investigations are now underway into an attack on a teenager in Co. Meath.

The victim suffered apparent facial injuries in the incident in Navan this week which is now the subject of a garda investigation.

While the Louth Meath Education and Training Board is also investigating the incident, as some of those involved were wearing their school uniforms.

Officers are asking people to stop sharing footage of the attack online.

Child poverty needs to be placed at the top of the political agenda as figures reveal it is worsning in Ireland.

The call from Treoir, the Child and Family support organisation comes as CSO figures for last year show an increase of 7.5 per cent in the numbers of children in consistent poverty while there was a 20 per cent rise in children in deprivation.

The organisation is calling on the government to implement a Minimum Standard of Living for all families in the budget.

Nine people are dead and more than 13 thousand have been evacuated from their homes because of flash flooding in northern Italy.

Half a years worth of rain fell in the Emilia-Romagna region in the space of just 36 hours.

Around 120 landslides were reported and flooding affected 37 towns and communities.
