A Dublin teenager who was charged over a seizure of a handgun, ammunition and drugs has been granted bail.

The 16-year-old boy was granted legal aid and cannot be named because of his age.

The boy was charged under the Firearms Act for unlawful possession of a revolver with six rounds of ammunition at his north Dublin home in April 2021.

He also had Misuse of Drugs Act charges for unlawful possession of cannabis and cocaine and having them for the purpose of sale or supply on the same date.

The boy made no reply to the charge and has yet to indicate a plea.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial on indictment for the case to be heard at Circuit Court level, which has wider sentencing powers.

This non jury juvenile court can keep jurisdiction for serious category offences.

It has to take into account the defendant's age, their level of maturity as well as other relevant information.

This procedure requires a preliminary hearing with a Garda giving a summary of the prosecution evidence.

That's followed by possible cross-examination and legal submissions from the defence.

The teenager was ordered to appear again in February.

As a condition of bail, he was ordered by Judge John O'Leary to provide gardai with his phone number and to remain contactable.
