TDs and Senators from Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will debate opposing motions on the carbon tax this evening.
The Fine Gael Parliamentary Party members will be asked to pass a motion calling for a delay to next month's increase until the war in Ukraine's over.
While the Fianna Fáil PP will be asked to reaffirm support for the carbon tax increases as a way of ringfencing funding for climate projects.
The Greens support the planned increase next month, but the issue threatens to create a divide in the coalition.
Fianna Fail senator Malcolm Byrne, who's one of those behind his party's motion, says it's important the focus remains on the climate crisis.
"Unfortunately what we have seen of late is some populist politicians and climate sceptics trying to paint the carbon tax as being the cause of all of the increases in the cost of living.
"In fact, the carbon tax is just a very tiny part of the increases but the carbon tax is a ring fenced funds designed to fund all the things that politicians like to call for."
