The Taoiseach's latest comments on the Thalidomide scandal are being branded as "shocking" and "misleading".

The drug - which was used to treat morning sickness in the 1950s and '60s - left thousands of babies around the world with physical deformities.

It was removed from the international market in 1961, but continued to be prescribed by Irish doctors for another nine months.

Speaking yesterday, Leo Varadkar said he was sorry for those affected, but that it happened "at a time when the State didn’t regulate any medicines in the way that it does now".
