The Taoiseach will travel to Belfast today for talks with the main political parties in the North.

Speculation is growing that a compromise between the EU and the UK Government could be on the cards to address the stalemate over the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Recent signals from the British indicate that they have softened their position on the Northern Ireland Protocol and are prepared to reach a compromise to satisfy hardliners in the DUP .

The Taoiseach is set to meet the leaders of the five main political parties in the North at the Irish Secretariat in Belfast today. It's understood that a possible alternative to the checking of goods entering the North from Britain will be discussed.

If the DUP don't act on any fresh proposals from the EU and the Irish government by October 28th, a second assembly election for seats at Stormont is likely to take place next month, a prospect that is not likely to go down well with weary voters.
