The Taoiseach says there are "significant guarantees" in place to ensure the new National Maternity Hospital is fully independent.

Micheal Martin told a private meeting of his party last night government needs to "get it done" for the women of Ireland.

Concern within the coalition has seen a decision to go ahead with the hospital delayed by two weeks.

The issue will go before the Oireachtas Health Committee next week, and committee member Gino Kenny says the Health Minister still has questions to answer.

"People haver to make sure that there's governance there that medical procedures, which go against some religious ethos, that they're permissible in the new hospital when it's built.

"I think it's important a decision is made relatively quickly as to where we go from here, and that the hospital is built."
